The last two months, and then some

January 10th, 2010

Alright, alright, I haven’t blogged in ages. And I know I keep saying I’ll blog more often, but it requires being in the right mood, having something worth writing about, and having the time to write it.

The past month for me has consisted of more ups and downs than an alternating current. This is a long, boring and condensed overview of the last two months. So grab yourself a cuppa, sit back and relax.

Around a month ago we sat our mock A-Level exams. They were an absolute disaster. Over 70% of the maths group managed to get a big fat U on their paper, and as amusing as turning it into a smiley face was, it was still a U. According to my IT teacher, I managed to achieve the highest mark in the IT mock paper; I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I’d done very well in that paper, so to find out the result filled me with a little confidence. Physics is horrible, it really is. The test basically contained things we had never (and still haven’t) covered, but I still managed to get a D, which although it sounds pathetic, wasn’t too bad comparatively.

I’m really starting to get a little worried about A-Levels now. The pressure is really on; these pesky little buggers are much harder than GCSEs. It doesn’t help that our old, bubbly physics teacher has temporarily been replaced by a really old teacher who seems to have the incredible ability to actually slow down time when she talks. The lessons really are torture, they’re the kind of lessons where nobody seems to get anything at all. And at the point of writing, we still haven finished the course and the exams are next ruddy week!

On the eighth of December we had to present our marketing proposal business presentations. The business teachers are great; as long as you get the work done you can really work with them which is of course very beneficial for the project. My presentation consisted of presenting a fictional range of Microsoft computers with Microsoft software to combat Apple.

I’m a very strong believer of the look smart, think smart phrase. I’d say I normally dress relatively neatly, but for my presentation I decided to don a grey suit, blue shirt and purple tie (complete with golden tie clip). It did get some weird looks from some people. But I don’t care about them, they can fail their presentation and go back to their crack house to write depressing music. I was slightly late for my presentation due to printer problems; the school system is pretty bad.

When I arrived Mr Chittock was just taking Mr Webb’s position as the judge, if that’s what you call it. Think of it like X Factor but with a business presentation rather than a fat girl strangling a cat. I drew my magical pointer pen and I presented my presentation as best I could, I had ten minutes and only ten minutes to get through and read 30 slides of condensed information. I didn’t think I was going to fit it all in, but evidentially I did as I was told it was “a fantastic presentation” definitely worth “13 or 14 marks out of 14”. When people asked me what I got I chose to relay the lower mark, I didn’t want to boast and I certainly didn’t want to risk telling people I got 14 and them find out I only got 13. However, I did actually manage to get 14, only one other person (a girl in the other group) managed to get top marks. Thankfully, there’s no looming exam in business as a lot of it is coursework, which is very good for me.

Business lessons are easily the most enjoyable of the week. Although, I often end up being provoked into some long rant about weird, awkward and uncomfortable matters. Before the Christmas holidays something I said was misinterpreted and related to women’s breasts in the lesson. I launched into a humorous defensive rage, whilst Mr Chittock also decided to join in the fun and relate the hand movements I was making to the subject matter.  Indeed, business lessons are certainly an interesting variation on a stereotypical lesson.

Physics, on the other hand, has been exceedingly difficult. The substitute teacher has been teaching us for about a month, but she hasn’t actually been teaching us, if you catch my drift. She’s the stereotypical old teacher who spends the lesson writing work on the board for us to simply copy down. I honestly cannot think of a more ineffective or inefficient method of teaching. Our learning has further been restricted by many unforeseen circumstances, we’ve probably missed a good month of teaching, and due to the recent weather and snow days STILL have yet to finish the course.

December the eleventh was my birthday. I love birthdays, it gives me an excuse for being smug and childish. I was wished a happy birthday by many and given a couple of presents and a couple of cards. A couple of birthday wishes were addressed to ‘Maxwell’, the name Lauren calls me by despite my full first name just being ‘Max’. Everybody made it fantastic, and I started to arrange a get-together closer to Christmas to celebrate my 17th with a small selection of my closest friends.

Amidst the chaos of the Christmas period (Bah! Humbug!) there was a Christmas party. Whilst not usually in my nature to attend such social festivities I decided I’d give it a go, afterall, it was the first party in sixth form I actually had the opportunity to go to. I even bought a rose for one of my closest friends who’d been a good friend when I was feeling down the previous week. I got the bus to the party, I sat with Chris Minns, he’s a great guy to be around. The bus journey was rather wild, and consisted of the majority of the bus shouting “You slag!” which was apparently an amusing line (which is entirely matter of opinion) off a TV show everybody watched apart from me.

I envisioned a prom-like event. I envisioned wrong. It was more of an overwhelming drugged up hippie rave that had an all night soundtrack consisting of music that was less imaginative than the stuff you’d hear in a lift (or elevator, for my American reader(s)). I arrived and basically didn’t do much thereafter. I was duel kissed several times, first by Sophie and Lauren T, and secondly by Chris Minns and Lauren C. I mainly stuck with Ben, Nico or Chris S during the evening; it wasn’t really their scene either.

As the night went on I became more depressed and miserable, and regrettably, so did basically everyone else whom I care about. It was the worst of times. But here’s a snapshot of of the party, I’m in there somewhere!

13665_376765135079_638140079_10247394_238409_n

And here’s the party when it really got started. Not really my scene, and the people who urge me that it’s actually fun to join the sweaty bundle of human flesh on the dance floor and dance like a moron are ruddy liars. Pfft! Parties!

13665_376765380079_638140079_10247420_6478220_n

After the party, it was the bus journey home. I taunted a couple of drunk people before I left though, why not, they’re not gunna remember a thing. “Do you know what the cure for a hangover is? Nothing, so you’re all screwed!” I sat next to Tom Cook on the way back, yet another person who was feeling miserable, I think we were probably the only sober people on the bus.

Thursday, the day after the party. Now this was an interesting day, almost everyone was recovering from the previous night. It was snowing pretty bad, I don’t really remember too much of it. Long story short, school was closed the next day ’cause of the snow. Usually a day of school is cause for celebration, I didn’t look at it that way. I hadn’t given anyone a card or present as I’d (like with everything else) left it to the last minute. The party and snow day made the week come to a very anticlimactic end.

None-the-less, Christmas was looming over head. A season for good will. No, I’m only joking, it’s really the season for big companies to get idiots to spend more money and mess up our economy even more. But I, as you do, entered the festive spirit and got my closest friends presents.

I spent a good chunk of time finally sorting out something to do with friends to finally celebrate my 17th birthday. I kept trying to sort out a date that suited everybody, and I eventually came up with the 20th. Finally, things looked promising, I had got rough confirmations from everyone saying they were gunna make it. A couple of people were coming over and the others were meeting as the cinema, as we were going to watch New Moon.

Lauren was the first to arrive, after which we went up to the summer house along with my sister. Chris also arrived. We all chatted for a couple of minutes and then we set off to the cinema to meet the others. We were a tad late but still go there in time to see the film. I gotta admit, the Twilight Saga is one of those things that has sparked massive controversy, and I think a lot of people dislike it purely because it’s caused such a mass following of obsessive fans. However, having said that, I thought the film was good it had a good story, but part of it and possibly it’s main flaw was that some parts felt as though they were specifically catering for fans who wanted to see all sorts of weird romances in contained within. I’d say it was a good film though.

As we came out of the cinema I suggested we all went and got a coffee. Although, in retrospect, this wasn’t the best idea. The paths were lethal, blankets of ice had settled there. Staggering through town, taking one step at a time, we found that the coffee shops weren’t open as it was a Sunday. I texted my dad to come and pick us up, at least I think I did, I’m still new to this mobile form of communication. We made our way back to the cinema, when I’d arranged pick-up. I walked close to Lauren on the way back to act as support as her shoes had literally no grip at all. All in all it was a pretty pointless walk, but I quite liked it. Oh yes, and Eliza had me believing she was a part time prostitute for half of the journey.

On the way back home we stopped for pizza. How many teenagers with more than adequate intelligence does it take to order a pizza? We all went in to order, it wasn’t very successful but we came to a conclusion on the food in the end, thankfully Eliza seemed to take charge and order what we’d all decided on… Then I added lots of other stuff. During the waiting period my delightful dad came in and went out of sight, and walked back out again. Seconds later, the waitress came out asking “Where’s Max,” at first I thought it must have been another Max. I was caught out and given a Pizza Hut cardboard chef’s hat and some colouring pencils with which Lauren and I decorated the hat. Hm, thanks dad.

Once we made it home with the pizza I directed the gang straight to the summer house. We chose to watch The Hangover, Eliza told me it’s hilarious and will only make me feel a “little” bit awkward. The large white sheet isn’t on the wall for no reason though, we have a projector to project the film onto. Nifty. Everything set up and boom. The projector didn’t work. Ben fiddled around with some stuff like a resident engineer and I phoned dad to come and help, during this time, Lauren went and got it working.

The Hangover was a pretty hilarious film. Most of the funniest parts were just based around general stupidity, for example when a Holocaust ring is mentioned, the comeback is “I didn’t know they gave out rings at the Holocaust.” It’s the things you don’t expect that make it funny, and the film is filled with those bits. The credits were… awkward. I had to jump for the control to turn everything off.

My parents then walked in with cake singing me Happy Birthday, before we dealt out the party bags. The girls preferred the contents of the boys party bags though; pirate gear. It was a fantastic evening, I still believe it was probably the best night I’ve had in years. But pictures or it didn’t happen, right? Well, lookie here!

I got to wield the knife to cut the cake. I always have a tendancy to be really childish when weilding sharp objects, it not the best combination. Time had flew, the cake was the metaphorical full stop of the penultimate chapter in the evening. As Ben and Chris were picked up, I gave them a small Christmas present. I went with my dad to drop off the Chloé, Lauren and Eliza after exchanging Christmas gifts with them too. And that was that, a thoroughly enjoyable evening with five of my closest friends. Everything seemed to go great, I wanna do a gathering again at some point with the same people; it just seemed to work.

Over the next few days leading up to Christmas, I really got into taking the dog for long walks in the snow. I always moan as I’m going out, but when I actually get outdoors I kind of like it. Yes, for reals. I don’t know why, I think it just gives me peace and quiet to mull over things that’re on my mind or going on in my life.

Christmas was one of the best this year, it just went really well, we all got great presents and all enjoyed ourselves. In my family, we spend Christmas as a family at home, it’s pretty traditional and that’s how I like it. I’m quite a traditional chap, see? When everyone was up we all went down together to see what Santa had left us. I got Modern Warfare 2 as my main present and haven’t been able to stop playing it since. Stunning graphics, great gameplay, fantastic story, what more does a growing boy need? I had so much to eat on Christmas day, and the days after. So much chocolate!

Then there was the inevitable interlude whilst we awaited New Year’s Day. I kept busy though, started work on my new website design (which at the point of writing is live) and met up with Andy. Andy had texted me asking if I wanted to meet up and see a film. Eager to socialise I agreed and set off that night to go see the new Sherlock Holmes film. It was great to catch up with Andy, I hadn’t seen him during the holidays. Sherlock Holmes was a decent film, certainly is not the stereotype though, but I still haven’t entirely decided whether that’s a good thing.

I didn’t really do much else. I spent most of the days sleeping and feeling like an anarchist everytime I was told to get out of bed and didn’t. A couple of days before New Year’s Day, I received some tragic news about a close friend, I won’t go into it, but it made me feel pretty upset.

The night of New Year’s Eve (I don’t even know whether that requires capital letters), my family and I watched the new Star Trek film. I ordered it ages ago but hadn’t watched it. Have you seen it? It’s amazing. It really is five star material. I was so in the zone that it prompted several days on sitting downstairs and just watching the original series of Star Trek.

Holidays seem to go faster and faster now-a-days, the Christmas holidays went too fast. Before I knew it I was back at school for the physics revision session. As we were all so far behind and in a last minute futile effort to attempt to prevent failure, physicists were told to come in a day early for a quick run through of what we should know. It didn’t really help that much, but the guy teaching it was great, a real eccentric physics guy with a green laser pointer. Incidentally, green lasers are very cool, as soon as I got home, I ordered one.

Tuesday was the official day everybody went back to school. It was good too see everybody again. Business wasn’t the same, but it was still rather fun and had the usual characteristics of a typical business lesson which I’ve spoken of. Lauren says I look like and remind her of David Mitchell, a guy who was on The Big Fat Quiz of The Year (especially when I didn’t dance in such a way that apparently happened on the program). Peter agreed with with this, but I don’t really see too much of a similarity. It’s not the first time this comparison has been bought up at school, I don’t even watch enough TV to know. I was sent a link to said person and compared it to my Facebook profile picture…

The afternoon was the first real physics lesson with Mr Halls. His lessons are great, Ben and I sit on the same table and the majority of sarcastic, witty and humorous comments spawn from there. In fact, after showing Mr Halls an XKCD web comic, he decided to give me my own small section to put up things related to physics that I found funny. The wall or area will be called ‘Max’s Wall of Exceedingly Eccentric Nerdy Things Vaguely Related to Physics’. Mr Halls is one of those teachers I think I get on pretty well with, he told me about his iPhone which now just makes me want one even more. Below is a picture of epic physics lesson!

The rest of the week went pretty slowly, I won’t go into much detail as there isn’t much to talk about. School was cancelled for a day and a bit due to the weather. It absolutely chucked down the snow snow. The week has pretty much been cramming for exams that are starting this Monday (tomorrow). I don’t know how I feel about the exams. I know I’m pretty much screwed for the physics one, but I think so are many others. We have yet to finish the course, and have had no real practice or advice. I see a resit there.

During the week I hired not a just a but THE voiceover man for my website, which you will have probably heard on the homepage of this website. His name’s Peter Dickson, he’s a great guy and gave me quite a bit of extra material to work with. Once I had these files I launched the final version of the website which uses CSS3 to achieve shadows and rounded corners rather than images. Internet Explorer still doesn’t approve and messes it up but in every other browser I think it looks pretty professional. In case you didn’t here it or just wanna hear it again, here’s the voiceover!

How the new design SHOULD look in a half decent browser.

I think that’s pretty much given a swift overview of my last two months. I’d love to say I’ll update more often, but as history shows, I’ve broken that promise before. I might write a blog moaning about exams next week. Who knows?

Admittedly, this blog was slightly rushed and it is almost 3,500 words, so if there are any mistakes or inaccuracies bung me a quick message and I’ll fix ‘em up.

Recent stuff!

November 1st, 2009

School’s been fairly good lately. Everybody seems to have settled in but despite this it’s all still very new and we’re still learning about sixth form. The work has been getting steadily harder. We did a mock physics test not long ago, and I realised that while I can do the equations and calculations required I have trouble deciphering what they are actually asking for in the question and how I go about solving it with an arsenal of potential equations to choose from.

Picking up from where I left off with my last blog, we’ve had a few driving related things going on at school due to the inevitability that all of lower sixth will be turning 17 soon. It worked out alright for me really as we got to miss maths in the afternoon, which is great ’cause maths is the most boring subject I have ever sat in. I ended up sitting with Amber during the talk, which was interesting. When the speaker tried provoking emotions asking what we’d feel if we ran over a small child through dangerous driving she pointed out you’d feel “a little bump,” which, I suppose is true…

I’ve also decided to attend the debating society at school. The first time I went I found it interesting, basically it’s just two panels arguing for or against a matter chosen by a teacher. The audience also get involved by asking provocative and awkward questions to test how well they know the subject. Plus it gives the panel a chance to lie and cheat their way towards winning; just like real politics! At the end the audience votes the side that had the most convincing arguments and they’re declared the winners.

I’m finding myself a little worried with some things. I’m sure it’s common, but there are things, especially in maths where I just think to myself that if I was presented with the question in a real exam I would just freeze up and muck up the question. I suppose by the time we have to do any tests we’ll have done some practice papers and everything though. Applying what I know just seems to be where I go wrong, I know most of what I need to know and how to do what I need to do, but I can’t seem to recognise what part of it to use in a certain question. It seems some questions are very loosely worded. I guess it’s all going alright though, my report was fairly decent so I’m not worrying too much just yet; I’ll just need to approach a big nasty teacher if I really do need something explained.

October the 18th was Chloé’s birthday, she had a party at her house which I was invited to. Prior to the party I went and got a scarf, chocolate and flowers for her. My parents dropped me off just after two where I was welcomed b Chloé’s mum, and then by Chloé herself. We went up to her room where I met other familiar faces such Eliza, Adam and Simon. After talking for a while and admiring the view Chloé had from her bedroom window we all decided on a film to watch, we ended up watching A Knight’s Tale (no relation to Shark Tale) whilst snacking on chocolates. After the film even more great food was bought out, like homemade cakes which were lovely. We played Articulate, where I teamed up with Adam and Joel, after we’d ate and I learned that I absolutely suck at that game, but enjoyed it none-the-less. Unfortunately it’s true what they say; time flies when you’re having fun and my dad soon came to pick me up. After a brief hug with Chloé, I was off.

Nothing much happened for the following week. We had a horrible physics test on the Monday and we were introduced to our physics coursework the next day. Hopefully this’ll give me an opportunity to get some marks in the bag. I think I decided I was gunna choose silicon as my material, because of it’s use in microchips. Business was also quite fun; I have a bff(?) and Rhys sat with us and had the nerve to beat my score on an iPod game. Wednesday wasn’t too bad, I actually attended the last class of general studies and managed to get the highest in the class on the technology test; despite not being there for the majority of the lessons. The general studies test was mainly just technology that had been taken from the news. Oh, and I was ill for the rest of the week, although I came in on Friday to get some work files which I’ve since deemed useless.

Aside from school I haven’t been doing too much. To earn a little money and fuel my own personal interest I now help a young guy called Math with computers and his history project. He’s around ten I think and I helped him set up his new PC, telling him the connections, and how to get things done on the computer. I then helped him pimp up his history slideshow on ancient Egyptians,  he was quite insistent we include a picture of Tutankhamen’s mummified head. Sometimes I get sidetracked as he talks about Pokémon or games though; he knows how to distract me. I’ve also been in talks with a friend of my dads who owns a telecomms company about doing some work there, with SipXecs, an IP PBX which I haven’t really got my head around. I’ll just see what happens. That seems to be a phrase I’m saying alot now, ‘I’ll see what happens’, and the more I say it the more I realise I can’t just wait and see what happens, I need to get things done and act. Alas.

Then it was half term. I didn’t really do much over half term, I had it in my mind that I was gunna go to the cinema and meet up with people and do cool things. But I just, as always, never got around to doing anything. My organisational skills are a disaster zone. Not only did I not see anybody, I couldn’t even play games either as my graphics card had melted and exploded and stuff. I’ve since order the ATI 5850, but that hasn’t arrived and isn’t due to arrive for a while. I’ve been considering cancelling it, and possibly getting the next one up, numero uno, the big cheese, head honcho, whatever you wanna call it; the 5870.

I’ve actually watched alot of films over half term. And I watched trailers of both films and games that are coming out later this year. I was going to pre-order Left 4 Dead 2, but since I saw the trailer for Modern Warfare 2, I kinda lost interest in Left 4 Dead. I also saw the trailer for Toy Story 3 on YouTube, which is incredible. I really wanna go and see that film. The first one has always really been my all-time favourite film as it’s like one of the first ones I can remember, and more importantly a film I’m always enjoyed and probably always will.

Here’s the Modern Warfare 2 trailer too. I know what I’ll be doing over the next few months; needless to say fragging the hell outta this game. The trailer looks awesome, everything about it looks awesome. I even love the music in the trailer, good ol’ Hans Zimmer!

Gone bloggin’

October 4th, 2009

I really should update this thing more regularly. I haven’t updated this blog in ages, but in my defence I have been back at school and have been busy with a range of things. I’ll try to recall all of the important things that have happened since my last update, but I’ll probably miss out quite a bit.

The second of September was an interesting day. It was the day before we went back to school, it was the day before the first day of sixth form. I was anxious and nervous, anticipating seeing lots of people who I’ve known for ages and trying to look pleased that I was seeing them again. This was also the day I went on an online spending spree. Long story short; after two hours on the Apple store my credit card was £1,010 lighter. I bought a MacBook Pro and an iPod Touch, but the iPod was free ’cause of a student deal.

The first day of sixth form wasn’t that great to be honest, I’d built up a worst case scenario in my mind for sixth form and the first day pretty much lived up to that. There aren’t really any people in my form who I can say I actually like, and my form tutor is head of PE, although we have some form of mutual understanding and oddly enough a form of respect for each other despite being complete opposites. The first day was primarily and introductory day, so we didn’t have any lessons, although I was quick to find that there weren’t many friends that shared the same lessons as me anyway. And to make things even worse, Ben had gone and told Lauren I didn’t enjoy the film I had seen with her at the cinema, which was not true since I had enjoyed it, but thought it was a little predictable.

Friday, the second day of sixth form, seemed to go quite a bit smoother than the previous day. I’d gotten used to the main areas and learned where people whom I liked congregated. I had taken Maths, Physics, ICT and Business for A-Level and it was soon time for the first of these lessons. We had the morning off lessons to fill in some sixth form sheets, so the day started with lessons 3 and 4, which were ICT for me. I had Mr Gamwell for ICT, we were doing about data and information which was very boring. But we did do some binary, which is always fun. Lunchtime quickly passed and I had two free periods in the afternoon. I met up and sat with Chloé for the first of these periods where we discussed lessons and whether or not she was going to drop Chemistry and take Classics. Chloé did decide to take Classics in the end, which she went to arrange during lesson 6 whilst I met up with Chris and Ben who’d just came out of maths lessons.

Despite a rather dull and depressing first few days at the place where I will be spending the next two years of my life, a smile was soon bought to my face when I saw two boxes in my bedroom decorated with the Apple logo. A few minutes later I had a big knife and my dad had a camera for the nerdy unboxing video which I do. Ten minutes later and after a clean install of Snow Leopard I was the proud owner of a MacBook Pro and an iPod Touch. The MacBook and Snow Leopard are phenomenally impressive, the speed and performance is unbeatable, and what’s more, everything on the Mac just seems to have been thought about to make it easier and simple for the user. For this reason, I’m a Mac.

I spent most of the weekend waving my MacBook around like a lightsaber. I’d put MacSaber on it, a clever little piece of software that works with the MacBook’s SMS (sudden motion sensor) to detect movement and emit an awesome lightsaber sound when movement is detected. Oh yes, and I’ve also got this for my iPod.

The next week of school wasn’t very productive. I was still feeling lazy from the holidays, I’m still lazy now, I just can’t use that excuse this time. Monday was fairly interesting; ICT with Mr Poole and Physics with Mrs Fletcher. I began to see that perhaps sixth form wasn’t that bad, after all, I had both Chris and Ben in my physics group as well as an assortment of other people who I’d class as friends.

Tuesdays are full days for me, no free periods to mess about in at all. Four lessons of business followed by two lessons of physics, it’s all rather intense. Business wasn’t too bad actually; we were moved to a computer room where I sat next to Lauren, which made the thought of four business lessons seem much nicer. Apparently, Ben had told Lauren the truth and admitted I didn’t say I hated The Proposal, which made things better. The work was simple enough, it’s basically rewording the textbook and chucking in a few examples along the way. After lunch, it was physics with Mr Halls. I’d never had him before but the first lesson was fun enough, we got to play with party poppers… I was too busy collecting the innards of the party poppers to put on top of my head to understand what we were meant to be doing but it was fun none-the-less.

Wednesday was where I had my first lesson of A-Level Maths. The teacher is great, he really makes sure people understand the work and unlike some, doesn’t mind if you don’t get it; which should come in very handy for me. Despite the good teacher, it’s still maths though. I find the work set by this teacher, Mr Hydes, relatively simple, I’ll admit it can take a while for it to sink in sometimes but when it clicks and I understand it I can do it without any problems. I had business in the afternoon, in which I sat next to Lauren again and for which reason business lessons are turning out to be rather fun, I also sit next to Peter whom I talk to also during business lessons as he and I share a few similar interests.

As far as Thursday was concerned, it was maths day. The first maths lesson is okay, there’s Mr Hydes, who explains the work well where I can get on with it whilst understanding it. The last two lessons of that day are with a different teacher, where to work is pretty damn confusing. I’m fairly sure I’m not the only one who finds it confusing, but I just don’t like this guy’s style of teaching. It’s more of a case of showing us the method, and then leaving us to get on with it.

I was looking forward to Friday. Not only ’cause of the obvious reason that it’s the end of the week, but also because it works out well for my lesson-wise and socially. ‘Twas physics first where we had Miss Fletcher and were mainly getting our heads round the basic concepts we would need to understand in order to do well in physics. Then it was ICT, we were carrying on with what we did the previous week; data, information and knowledge. Then it was over, there were no more lessons for me in the day, which felt good. I spent lunchtime talking to people and socialising, something I hadn’t really done in previous years due to commitments being stupid somewhere. I spent the two free lessons in the afternoon talking with Chloé again, after the first bell rang we were joined by Adam, Chris, Ben, Eliza and a few others.

By the end of the day I had started to feel a little more optimistic about sixth form, I still had (and still have) my doubts and worries about it though. At some point, a new subject was added to everybody’s timetable known as General Studies. It’s probably the most boring subject ever to have been invented, we were doing technology which although bearable, wasn’t my idea of fun when I could be having a free period. I still managed to annoy the teacher by claiming Twitter was the greatest invention of mankind. It was still rather dull though, and I decided to skip the lesson the following week. The week following that the teacher also decided to skip the lesson, I wrote on his board ‘We were here. Where were you?’, and Nico added a broken love heart.

The weeks following the initial weeks seem to have been pretty generic, but what can you expect? Business and Physics seem to be the most enjoyable lessons for me, primarily due the there being a selection of friends in each one. Friday is by far the best day of the week, and not only ’cause it’s the last day of the week but also as it allows me to socialise with friends during the two free periods that afternoon. Friday afternoons are usually spent talking to Chloé, Adam, Ben and Chris, but I’ve met up with Lauren once or twice during the afternoons and chatted with her too. I’ve also seen Eliza a few times when she comes to the sixth form garden. Unfortunately though I don’t see as much of these people as I’d like to though, and I rarely get the chance to talk to several.

In the world outside of school, I have signed up to Facebook. I feel so dirty, like I’m just another drone in Facebook’s database like everybody else. I still hate the site out of principle. I hate how it exploits online socialising to the extent people depend on it more than real-life socialising, I further hate how they hook teenagers to the site with crappy little games and then launch an attack of advertising in their face. And the website doesn’t even work, the chat box is always broken and more unstable than a cleverly worded and amusing metaphor which I shall add here later. Overall it sucks. But it does, however, give me a way to keep in contact with people whom I like. People had nagged at me for ages to get it, Ben got it days before me which made me feel slightly less guilty, and Lauren had encouraged me to sign up too.

I signed up to Facebook on Friday, the following day I went to SantaPod Raceway. We drove up to SantaPod where we spent the night in a hotel as it takes quite a while to drive up there and we didn’t wanna have to drive back in the dark and get eaten by bears or Northeners. Basically SantaPod is an incredible raceway where people try to kill themselves in very fast cars. The top fuellers can usually top 300mph and get the half-mile length completed in under 5 seconds. They have a custom two seater, which people can have a go in if they fork over a huge wad of cash. I’d love to be able to go in the two seater, only problem being that it’s rather a lot of money for five seconds worth, but still the experience must be incredible… Maybe one day. Below is a video of a few of the best cars and a picture of me at the hotel.

By the Sunday I had got home, my inbox was filled with about 100 Facebook friend requests. I accepted 25. The following week of school was pretty generic, at this stage I was pretty much over the nervousness and anxiety of sixth form. It’s a while ago now so it might not have been this week, but during one of the weeks, I bought in my iPod and using the powers of the lightsaber app Tom Cook and I had an epic lightsaber battle. I can be fairly eccentric.

I went go karting the weekend following that week. My dad had fixed up the go karts with a new set of tyres which are super slicks, this means that they should in theory stick to the track better whilst going around the corners causing and overall increase in speed. And I gotta admit; they certainly do work. I found them much easier to drive with.

In more recent weeks, school’s been good. I’ve been adapting fairly well and believe I’m doing fairly well in most lessons, apart from two irritating maths lessons. Last week, I went to visit the headteacher and basically, pitched an idea to him for a website I wanted to develop. It’s an interesting idea that I think could help everybody including both the school and myself. We’ll see how it goes but I’m hopeful. Business was annoying last week as the friends around me didn’t think I could cope in the real world independantly. Lauren joked I should go with her and her friend (EDIT: Lauren’s friend is also called Lauren) to town to prove it, it’s something I might just have to do at some point.

I haven’t been up to much recently. I’m actually in the process of quite a few things including taking a few steps towards getting a driving license for when I’m ready to drive in December, and applying for a job at a computer/telecomms business which my dad’s friend owns. He is awesome. He has an awesome Porsche.

That’s pretty much it for now I guess. This is a condensed version of all the stuff I’ve been up too over the last month or so. I’ve missed out quite a bit of web development, pirate talk, and Dvorak keyboards. I’ll hopefully be arranging something with friends at some point soon, which’ll give me something to write about. Hopefully now I’ve got this massive blog out of the way I’ll update the site more often with little blogs and updates… But I’ve said that before. If you’re desperate to see what I’m up to you can always stalk me on Twitter.
